What does "Small/Cool" mean and how did it get started?
Apartment Therapy’s founder and CEO invented Small/Cool in 2005 as a contest to find the smallest, coolest, real-life space in NYC (and eventually, the world!). In 2020, we expanded on the Small/Cool theme to create a virtual experience that featured designers, unique trend spaces, and Instagram events. The award-winning platform was a hit, so in 2021, we again hosted a social-first Instagram extravaganza where our audience could shop the trends straight from their couches.
In Spring 2022, we welcomed a new class of Small/Cool designers, each of whom were challenged to create the smallest, coolest space they could imagine — all in less than 120 square feet! Their work was on display at Small/Cool NYC — our first-ever consumer-facing event in Manhattan. Readers across the country were able to shop the trends via a custom 3D capture and tuned in to Instagram and TikTok for behind-the-scenes coverage and interviews with our partner designers.
Small/Cool NYC was an IRL, social, and online event that brought you decorating tips and tricks for small, cool spaces from today’s hottest design tastemakers. We invited those experts to bring 2022’s hottest home decor trends to life — all in small spaces. For the first time ever, the designers’ visions were available for exploration
in-person in NYC April 22 - May 15.
These trend spaces are now available for our global audience of home enthusiasts to shop on apartmenttherapy.com.
Plus, our editors took you behind-the-scenes right on our Instagram and TikTok — showcasing the spaces, talking with the designers who curated them, and inspiring you to tackle your very own Small/Cool projects.
