What does "Small/Cool" mean and how did it get started?
Apartment Therapy’s founder and CEO invented Small/Cool in 2005 as a contest to find the smallest, coolest, real-life space in NYC (and eventually, the world!). In 2020, we expanded on the Small/Cool theme to create a virtual experience that featured designers, unique trend spaces, and Instagram events. The award-winning platform was a hit, so in 2021, we again hosted a social-first Instagram extravaganza where our audience could shop the trends straight from their couches.
This year, we’re excited to welcome a new class of Small/Cool designers, each of whom have been challenged to create the smallest, coolest space they can imagine — all in less than 120 square feet! Their work will be on display at Small/Cool NYC — our first-ever consumer-facing event in Manhattan. (Mark your calendar for Fridays - Sundays, April 22 - May 15!) Once again, readers across the country will be able to shop the trends via a custom 3D capture and tune in to Instagram and TikTok for behind-the-scenes coverage and interviews with our partner designers all month long.
Small/Cool NYC is a can’t-miss IRL, social, and online event that brings you decorating tips and tricks for small, cool spaces from today’s hottest design tastemakers. This year, we invited those experts to bring 2022’s hottest home decor trends to life — all in small spaces. For the first time ever, the designers’ visions will be available for you to explore in-person in NYC starting Friday, April 22. The interactive designer and trend showcase will be open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until May 15.
We will also have IRL workshops, designer meet & greets, and more surprises throughout the month! Sign up here to get all the latest updates.
Can’t get to NYC? These trend spaces will be revealed on apartmenttherapy.com on April 22, so you can shop the designers’ spaces (and add your favorites to your personalized wish list), without leaving home.
Plus, our editors will take you behind-the-scenes right on our Instagram and TikTok — showcasing the spaces, talking with the designers who curated them, and inspiring you to tackle your very own Small/Cool projects. Tune in to Instagram Live... you won’t want to miss it! The final schedule will be posted above soon and will also be revealed on our Instagram.
What is Small/Cool NYC?
Yes! General admission is free and the space is open 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. every Friday through Sunday from April 22 - May 15:
April 22 - April 24
April 29 - May 1
May 6 - May 8
May 13 - May 15
Walk-ins are permitted, but we suggest registering in advance and arriving early. Registration will begin soon.
Sign up here when it goes live! The safety of our community is our number-one priority, and therefore, we will be closely following New York State’s COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.
Is Small/Cool NYC open to the public?
Small/Cool NYC is FREE to attend.
If you want to buy any of the items featured in the Small/Cool spaces, you can easily do so by scanning the QR code outside of each trend space and shopping the items via links on apartmenttherapy.com. When you click the “Buy Now” buttons by the products, you will be redirected to the vendor site to make the final purchase and coordinate shipping details. Inventory will not be available at the event.
What does it cost to attend?

How did you select the home decor trends?
Shopping your favorite products from each of the trend spaces will be easy, intuitive, and fun! Starting April 22, all of the trend spaces will be shoppable above. Simply click on the trends that you’re interested in (it’ll likely be all of them!) and start browsing. Once you click the ‘Buy Now’ button next to the product, you’ll be directed to the brand’s site to place your order. If you’re a registered Apartment Therapy user, you will be able to save your favorites to your personalized wish list, making it easy to come back and purchase at your convenience.
For those of you coming to see the spaces IRL, you'll be able to shop the products by scanning a QR code just outside each trend space. A full list of products will be available for you to add either your cart or your wish list.
How can I shop the featured products?
There are SO many people that help bring you Small/Cool NYC! A huge shout out goes to our official paint partner, BEHR Paint and our official auto partner, Toyota Corolla Cross, as well as Ashley, Yogi Tea, and Chasing Paper.
Who is making this event possible?
Hundreds of home decor, furniture, and accent pieces will be represented at Small/Cool NYC, including the latest color collection from our official paint partner, BEHR Paint. Get excited to explore curated trend spaces that feature Ashley, Annie Selke, Albany Park, Apt2B, Arhaus, Article, Boutique Rugs, Burke Decor, Casper, Chasing Paper, Hayneedle, Jayson Home, Kardiel, Lodes, Lulu and Georgia, Minted, Revival, Rugs Direct, Serena + Lily, The Citizenry, The Novogratz, Urban Outfitters, World Market, and many more.
Once the event concludes, the majority of the products featured will be donated to our nonprofit partner, Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester, a nonprofit organization that transforms lives and communities by building affordable homes for families in need — and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing. With the help of thousands of volunteers each year, Habitat NYC builds and preserves homes for families across the five boroughs. Learn more at HabitatNYCWC.org or follow them on Twitter and Instagram.
What brands will be featured at the event and in the shopping experience?

Can I take photos and/or videos of the designs that I love?
Apartment Therapy hosts the Small/Cool Contest to search for the smallest, coolest real-life spaces around the world — and you, our readers, vote on your favorites to determine the champion. Anyone who lives in a home that's 1,000 square feet or smaller can enter the 2022 contest at this link between March 1 at 9 a.m. ET and March 15 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Then, throughout three rounds of public voting that will take place in May and June, Apartment Therapy readers can visit this link to upvote their favorite spaces. On June 21, we'll reveal the Small/Cool Contest grand prize winner, who will get $3,000 and the chance to be featured in an Apartment Therapy house tour. Apartment Therapy editors will also choose eight superlative winners, including Most Unexpected Use of Color and Best Painted Accent, presented in partnership with BEHR Paint, and these superlative winners will get social media badges — and endless bragging rights.
